• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday expanded COVID-19 vaccine options for children and adolescents by recommending use of the Moderna vaccine in children ages 6 through 17.

The CDC previously approved use of the Moderna vaccine for children six months through 5 years old and adults 18 years and older. All children six months and older are now eligible for either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

“It is critical that we protect our children and teens from the complications of severe COVID-19 disease,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement Friday. “Today, we have expanded the options available to families by recommending a second safe and effective vaccine for children ages 6 through 17 years.

“Vaccinating this age group can provide greater confidence to families that their children and adolescents participating in childcare, school, and other activities will have less risk for serious COVID-19 illness.”

• Community transmission of the virus remains high in Allen, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties, but overall disease burden in the region remains low. 1.8% of inpatient hospital beds were in use by COVID-19 patients in the last week, according to the CDC.
